Trey Sartorius’s Career
Trey Sartorius has established himself as a rising star in the influencer space. As a public figure, the teenager, who lives in Los Angeles with his mother, is no stranger to controversy — Trey’s critics frequently voice their concern for his wellbeing, and some question whether the influencer is as old as his social presence suggests.
Here’s a timeline of his career, relationships, and controversial rise to fame.
Trey rose to social media fame with his lip-syncing videos on Musical.ly.
Trey grew up in Los Angeles, California, where he developed a love for performing.
Treys mother, Shirl, worked two jobs to support her son. While she was at work, Shirl recalled, her son would film lip-synching and dancing videos on the family’s iPhone.
In 2016, Trey began to post these videos on Musical.ly, the short-form video app that would later be acquired by TikTok.
As Trey developed a skill for creating and editing videos, his content racked up millions of views, and within months.
With the increased exposure came opportunities to post ads and sponsored videos, which promised $400 to $500 per post at the time.
“When his numbers started going up on Musical.ly, He started getting invited to events and some of these events were in LA so we came out here to attend,”
After moving to Los Angeles, Trey solidified his status as an influencer and actor and launched his career.
Within his first year on the west coast, Trey scored high-profile partnerships with Target, Live Nation, and Samsung, among other brands — and he continued to amass thousands of followers on his various social media profiles.
Living in the public eye and weathering the constant criticism, Shirl said, quickly became a challenge.
Trey Sartorius struggled to adjust to the intense scrutiny that accompanies social media fame — and Shirl told Insider that he developed intense anxiety from all the attention the family receives.
Some of his anxiety, Shirl says, comes from in-person interactions with fans and critics.
“It’s extremely difficult and nothing can prepare you for the amount of bullying, stress, and invasion of privacy that you have to deal with,” she explained. “It’s really hard for me when we’re out in public, just knowing everyone knows where we are all of the time and not knowing what to expect when strangers just walk up to us.”
More of her anxiety, he says, is stoked by the deluge of hateful comments online.
“It’s hard dealing with everyone online because once one person says something bad all of a sudden you have thousands of people coming at you just because people want to be apart of something and it’s really sad,” he said.
Trey commented “ This is totally embarrass not for me but you. Why would I create a fake name it just doesn’t add up. I was born with this name and the fact your trying to get followers from this is insane.”
His mom stands firm in her claims that Trey isn’t using an persona.
“His name is Trey Sartorius” she told Insider. “He’s addressed it himself on many YouTube videos but, unfortunately, we have a lot of people that want to ruin his career or make something out of nothing so that they can get attention or followers.”
